What to Expect — Step by Step

Call any of our four offices or request an appointment online. Our scheduling team will confirm your insurance, walk you through prep instructions, and answer any questions.

Prepare

The day before your procedure, you’ll follow a clear liquid diet and take a bowel prep solution to clear your colon. Stay away from red, pink, purple coloring. We’ll provide complete written instructions and are happy to walk you through them by phone.

Your Procedure

Colonoscopies typically take 30–60 minutes. You’ll receive sedation so you’re comfortable throughout. Our clinical team monitors you closely from start to finish.

Recovery

You’ll rest in our recovery area for approximately 30–60 minutes. You’ll need a driver to take you home. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.

Your Results

Your physician will discuss preliminary findings with you before you leave. A detailed report will follow, along with recommendations for your next screening or any follow-up needed.

How do I know if I need a colonoscopy?

If you are 45 or older and have never had a colonoscopy, you should schedule one now. You may need one earlier if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, symptoms such as rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits, or a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease.

How long does a colonoscopy take?

The procedure itself usually takes from 15-30 minutes. Palmetto GI asks that you arrive 1 hour prior to your procedure. You should plan on spending about 2 -2.5 hours total to account for preparation, waiting and recovery time.

How long does the prep take?

The prep process involves dietary restrictions the day before (clear liquids only and stay away from red, pink, purple coloring) and taking a bowel preparation solution, usually split into two doses — one the evening before and one the morning of the procedure. Our team will give you complete instructions and is available to answer prep questions.

What if polyps are found?

If polyps are discovered during your colonoscopy, your physician will typically remove them during the same procedure. Most polyps are benign, but removal prevents any possibility of them developing into cancer. The tissue is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

How often do I need a colonoscopy?

For average-risk adults with a normal result, a repeat colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years. If polyps are found, your physician will recommend a more frequent follow-up schedule based on the type and number of polyps removed.

Does insurance cover a colonoscopy?

Under the Affordable Care Act, you can get certain preventive health care tests done for free. Colonoscopy is one of these tests. It is often free, but there are some cases in which patients must pay part of the cost. By answering a few questions, you can figure out what to expect to pay for your colonoscopy. Talk to your doctor’s billing team or your health plan if you have more questions.
