Most people have a digestive complaint they’ve learned to live with. Maybe it’s the bloating that shows up after dinner, the heartburn you treat with something from the pharmacy aisle, or a bathroom routine that hasn’t felt normal in months. You notice it, you shrug it off, and you move on.
It’s easy to ignore gut symptoms. They rarely feel like emergencies, they come and go, and almost everyone deals with them at some point. But your gut is trying to tell you something, and the sooner you listen, the more options you tend to have.
Here, our team at Palmetto GI looks at why people put off getting checked, which symptoms deserve a second look, and what to expect at a first visit.
Why it’s so easy to ignore gut symptoms
If you’ve been waving off digestive issues for a while, you’re not alone. We see a few patterns again and again.
The symptoms feel normal
Bloating, gas, and the occasional bout of heartburn are common, so they start to feel like a normal part of life. But “common” and “harmless” are not the same thing. Symptoms that show up regularly are different from symptoms that show up once in a while.
Over-the-counter relief works well enough
Antacids and fiber supplements can take the edge off, but that relief can also hide a pattern. If you need something from the medicine cabinet several times a week just to feel okay, that’s useful information for your doctor, not a reason to skip the visit.
It’s an uncomfortable topic
Many people feel awkward describing bowel changes or blood in the stool, even to a physician. Our GI physicians at Palmetto GI have these conversations all day long. Nothing you describe will surprise us, and the details you share help us help you.
Life is busy and the answer feels scary
A symptom that isn’t stopping you from functioning slides to the bottom of the list, and some people would rather not hear what a doctor might find. But digestive conditions often develop slowly, and most have straightforward, treatable causes. For the more serious ones, finding them early makes a real difference in how they’re managed.
Six gut symptoms worth a second look
You don’t need to panic over every stomachache. These six signs are the ones our specialists most often wish patients had mentioned sooner.
- Persistent bloating that doesn’t ease up after meals or over the course of the day.
- Heartburn more than twice a week, or reflux that disrupts your sleep or eating.
- New or ongoing constipation, diarrhea, or a change in how often you go or what it looks like.
- Abdominal pain that lingers, keeps coming back, or has no obvious cause.
- Weight loss or gain without a change in your diet or activity.
- Any visible blood in your stool, even if it seems minor or goes away on its own.
One of these on its own may have a simple explanation. Several together, or one that has stuck around for weeks, is a good reason to get checked.
What listening to your gut can do for you
Getting checked doesn’t commit you to anything except a conversation. Many of our patients learn that symptoms they assumed they’d have to live with have a treatable cause, such as acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or a food sensitivity. Treatment can range from diet and lifestyle changes to medication, depending on what we find.
Early evaluation also supports screening for more serious conditions. Colorectal cancer, for example, often develops from polyps that can be found and removed during a colonoscopy before they become a problem.
What to expect at a first GI visit
The first appointment at Palmetto GI is usually simpler than people expect. Your provider will ask about your symptoms, how long you’ve had them, what makes them better or worse, and your personal and family health history. It helps to jot down notes ahead of time, including any medications or supplements you take.
From there, we may recommend lab work, imaging, dietary changes, or a procedure like an endoscopy or colonoscopy. Not everyone needs testing, and your provider will explain why we’re recommending what we recommend. As with any medical care, some tests and treatments carry risks, and your provider can help you weigh the benefits and downsides.
Stop brushing it off
Ignoring gut symptoms is common, and the reasons make sense. But finding out what’s behind them is usually less complicated than living with the uncertainty.
